Baby Steps to Breaking the Trend

Monochromatic whites, grays, greiges and beiges have been the hot interior design color-trend for quite some time. As a decorator who doesn’t follow trends, I’m thrilled to see their monopoly starting to fade (and here's hoping crop tops will follow suit!)

How do I Introduce colOr to my home?

If you're ready to explore the bright world outside of the neutral palette but have reservations when it comes to color selection and placement, you're not alone! A top question I get asked by those scared to take the color leap is “how do I start to introduce color into my home?” I answer with a question of my own: “what color makes you happy?” Whatever their answer, that's the color to start introducing. It is always reassuring to have someone hold your hand as you step out of your comfort zone.

start with a throw pilLow or two

If you’re not ready to dive head first into color and just want to take baby steps, start with throw pillows. Oftentimes, when I have customers come in the store and we start looking at pillows in their “happy” color, the texture and pattern options they see in that range, start to ignite a new spark that makes them take another baby step toward thinking beyond just a solid-color.

Try a happy lAmp

Another tip would be to consider a “happy"-color lamp. A colorful lamp is an unexpected touch with a big impact. You can also keep it simple with colorful coffee table books. I use books several places in homes to add height, width, texture, depth, etc. On my coffee table, I choose books that aren’t just pretty, but that also interest me. Currently, I have Dolly Parton, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Hollywood Photography books on display. I decorate with function as a focus, and this category of books are meant to be enjoyed. They are great conversation pieces and guests love looking at them as well. Some I leave the covers on and some I take the covers off; I leave that up to what I feel brings out my “happy”.

Everything with bAlAnce

Please don’t get me wrong, neutrals are important and are colors in their own right. But once you start to mix the neutrals with deeper, vibrant or pastel colors, that is when you begin to create your own personal style trend. Start with these tips, and I am always here to walk you through the steps in hopes to see you leap!
